The American company Westinghouse receives the order for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Poland. This was announced by Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Saturday night.

According to the PAP news agency, companies from France and South Korea had also applied for the order. Politicians from both the government and opposition camps in Poland, quoted by PAP and Polish TV stations, praised the decision on Saturday as a “good choice” and “politically correct decision”.

As the TV news channel TVN24 reported, the government in Warsaw has yet to give its formal approval, but this is considered certain after Morawiecki’s announcement. The head of government had underlined the strategic aspect of cooperation with the USA in nuclear power plant construction that night: “A strong alliance is a guarantee for the success of joint initiatives,” he wrote on Twitter. The decision came after his talks with US Vice President Kamala Harris and US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, he said.

The first of two planned Polish nuclear power plants is to be built in the Baltic Sea region of Pomerania. According to government announcements, construction is scheduled to begin in 2026. The first reactor is scheduled to go online in 2033. The government plans provide for three nuclear reactors to be built at two locations. Commissioning is then planned step by step at intervals of two years. (dpa)
