“The United States announced its intention to work with Congress to provide resources for programs to protect and conserve the Brazilian Amazon, including initial support for the Amazon Fund, and to leverage investments in this very important region”, says an excerpt from the document released by the Itamaraty.

Lula traveled to the United States to talk about various topics, however, he would prioritize the discussion on the environment and climate change. The petista and Biden discussed conservation and combating deforestation in the forest. Despite the announcement, the two countries did not say the amounts.

The Amazon Fund was created in 2008 and has received R$3.3 billion in donations throughout its history. However, the program has not raised funds since 2019 due to the problems of the management of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

For 10 years, the fund received money from Norway, Germany, Petrobras and other national companies.

With Lula’s return to power, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that the German government will allocate 203 million euros to actions in the Amazon, with 35 million going directly to the fund. Norway’s Minister of Climate and Environment, Espen Barth Eidea, that the country will help with the restructuring of the project.

Asked about US entry into the Amazon Fund, Lula smiled and said “I think they will”. According to him, Biden is convinced of the need to help countries with large forest reserves to preserve these spaces.

“Not only do I think they will, but it is necessary that they participate. Because Brazil does not want to transform the Amazon into a sanctuary for humanity, but Brazil also does not want to give up the fact that the Amazon is a territory over which Brazil is sovereign”, said the head of the Brazilian Executive before the note.
