US continues to follow America first course – Rossiyskaya Gazeta

The US approach to the submarine deal with Australia shows that the new administration continues to follow the “America first” principle, Clement Bone, Secretary of State for European Affairs at the French Foreign Ministry, said on Public Senat.

According to him, the United States is acting in an unpleasant manner, not as partners. Don’t expect Washington to change course. Europeans “must strengthen the capacity for strategic autonomy.”

In this context, the diplomat recalled London’s withdrawal from the European Union (Brexit) under the slogan “Global Britain”. “This means a return to the sphere of American influence, consent to vassal relations. With this in mind, the Europeans should strengthen their ability to respond, strive for autonomy in the field of defense strategy,” Bon said.

We will remind, Australia, Great Britain and the USA on September 15 announced the creation of a new partnership in the field of security – AUKUS. As part of the agreement, Canberra plans to build at least eight nuclear submarines with the help of American and British technologies, the first of which will enter service in 2036, as well as re-equip the armed forces with US-made cruise missiles.

In this regard, the Australian side tore up the largest defense contract with Paris worth 56 billion euros for the construction of 12 submarines. The French Foreign Ministry called this decision “a stab in the back.” France announced an immediate withdrawal for consultations of its ambassadors from the United States and Australia, reports TASS.
