The US authorities may transfer funds received from the sale of the mansion of former Armenian Finance Minister Gagik Khachatryan in Los Angeles to the Armenian government, Day.Az reports.

It is noted that within the framework of cooperation between the Prosecutor General’s Office and the competent US authorities on the criminal case initiated in Armenia, the Khachatryan family’s mansion in Los Angeles, which, according to the decision of the American court, is considered property of criminal origin, will be confiscated and sold at the highest market value.

According to the information, negotiations are underway on the issue of returning to Armenia the majority of the funds received as a result of the sale of the mansion.

Let us recall that in a criminal case initiated by the Investigative Department of the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia, Gagik Khachatryan is accused of abuse of office and committing theft on an especially large scale.

In addition to criminal proceedings, as part of the claims for confiscation of property of illegal origin, considered in the Anti-Corruption Court, 210 real estate properties, 13 vehicles, shares in 29 legal entities, as well as more than 33 billion drams (about 80 million dollars) are required to be confiscated from former Finance Minister of Armenia Gagik Khachatryan and 25 persons associated with him, including his sons Gurgen and Artem Khachatryan.

Gagik Khachatryan has earned the nickname “super minister” in Armenian political circles due to his influence and the key posts he held in the country’s government. He was the chairman of the State Revenue Committee from 2008 to 2014 and the minister of finance from 2014 to 2016. He was one of the key political figures in the team of Serzh Sargsyan, who led Armenia from 2008 to 2018.
