Washington: US decision to extend legal stay of thousands of Ukrainian refugees. The Biden administration will allow thousands of Ukrainian refugees processed at the southern border following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to stay and work legally in the US for at least a year, according to a government announcement.

Thousands of Ukrainians flew to Mexico shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, displacing millions of refugees. Attempts were made to enter the US mainly through the southern border in California.

In just a few weeks, US border officials have allowed more than 20,000 Ukrainians to enter the country, exempting them from the epidemic restrictions known as Title 42.

The temporary process at the US-Mexico border was shut down in late April after the Biden administration created a formal program for displaced Ukrainians to fly directly to the US if they have American sponsors. More than 118,000 Ukrainians have come to the US under that program, known as Uniting for Ukraine.
