The United States indicated that Washington had no “aggressive intentions” towards Russia. The corresponding statement was made on Wednesday, December 22, by the press secretary of the White House Jennifer Psaki. According to her, the United States “has an open line for diplomatic discussions and interaction with Russia,” which the United States “counts and hopes” to continue.

“NATO is a defensive alliance. We have no aggressive intentions towards Russia,” said Psaki. “The aggression that we are witnessing on the Ukrainian border and the militant rhetoric are one-sided, I think everyone can see it,” the White House press secretary is sure.

US State Department: Russia continues to aggravate the situation on the Ukrainian border

Meanwhile, the US State Department indicated that “Russia continues to escalate and has not abandoned the buildup of troops” on the border with Ukraine.

Washington and its allies are “closely” monitoring the situation, a US foreign policy official told AFP, reiterating the warning that “any further aggression against Ukraine will have serious consequences and will be costly.”

The spokesman for the State Department also added that in January Washington is ready to begin reducing tensions by diplomatic methods “through multiple channels.”

Putin blamed US for escalating tensions in Europe

Moscow denies information about the impending invasion of Ukraine and, for its part, accuses NATO of arming Kiev and conducting maneuvers near the borders of Russia. For example, on December 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin blamed the United States for escalating tensions in Europe.

Last week, Russia demanded to exclude Ukraine from joining NATO and suggested that the alliance abandon military operations in countries neighboring Russia. The Foreign Ministry included the relevant provisions in the draft security treaty, which was sent to Washington. The United States stated that a dialogue with Moscow on security guarantees is possible only in conditions of a decrease in tensions along the borders of Ukraine and in coordination with European allies and partners.
