US Deputy Defense Secretary leads consultations with Dbeibah, Haftar in Tripoli, Benghazi

The Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity discussed with a high-level delegation from the United States of America enhancing cooperation between Libya and the United States in the areas of combating terrorism, developing military capabilities, and border control.

The US delegation was headed by US Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Celeste Wallander, Deputy Commander of US Africa Command (AFRICOM) John Brennan, and Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Libya, Jeremy Brent.

According to the Government of National Unity, the attendees discussed cooperation in the areas of combating terrorism, developing military capabilities, border control, supporting Libyan military training programs, and developing border control systems, in a way that enhances Libya’s capabilities to confront security threats.

The meeting also addressed the danger of closing oil fields and vital resources, as both sides stressed the need to protect these resources and ensure their continued flow in a way that achieves the interests of the Libyan people and enhances economic stability, according to the unity government.

The meeting addressed regional issues related to security and stability in North Africa, where both parties affirmed their commitment to enhancing security cooperation to achieve common interests and contribute to supporting stability in the region.

The delegation also discussed with the Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army, Lieutenant General Mohammed Al-Haddad, bilateral cooperation between Libya and the United States of America, and the implementation of a number of joint training programs to raise the efficiency of the Libyan Army personnel.

According to the General Staff, the Chief of General Staff pointed to the depth of relations between the two countries, and their support for the steps towards unifying the military establishment, to achieve a secure future characterised by economic prosperity and regional stability.

In the same context, the delegation discussed with the commander of the Dignity Forces, Khalifa Haftar, in Benghazi, the developments of the Libyan crisis, combating illegal immigration, and preparing the appropriate conditions for holding elections in Libya.
