A number of Moscow’s key proposals for security in Europe are unacceptable and “doomed to failure.” This was stated on Wednesday, January 12, by the US First Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman at a press conference following the meeting of the NATO-Russia Council (SNR) that ended in Brussels. We will not abandon NATO’s open door policy, Sherman said after nearly four hours of talks at the alliance headquarters in Brussels. “We are not going to agree that NATO cannot continue further enlargement,” she said.

Sherman also commented on the possibility of Ukraine joining the alliance. “At today’s CNR meeting, I reaffirmed the fundamental principles of the international system and European security: each country has the sovereign right to choose its own path,” she wrote on Twitter.

Wendy Sherman: Moscow should move to diplomacy

According to Wendy Sherman, Moscow can respond to the proposals of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Poland, which chairs the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, France, currently heading the EU Council, as well as US President Joseph Biden, “by reducing tensions by choosing the path of diplomacy by continuing to engage in dialogue in good faith and on a reciprocal basis so that together we can find solutions that enhance security for all. “

The US First Deputy Secretary of State also stated that Ukraine and Georgia have a lot of work to do to achieve the standards necessary for joining NATO.

A spokesman for the US foreign policy department separately raised the issue of commissioning the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, saying that it threatens “the energy and national security of a significant part of the Euro-Atlantic community.”

First meeting with SNR 2019

On January 12, Brussels hosted the first meeting of the Council of People’s Commissars since 2019. The negotiations were attended by representatives of 30 countries of the North Atlantic Alliance and the Secretary General of the organization Jens Stoltenberg. The Russian delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Alexander Grushko, which included Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin. The United States was represented, in particular, by Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, while other NATO countries were represented by their special envoys to the alliance or other officials.

The meeting of the NATO-Russia Council is one of the stages of the “diplomatic marathon” to resolve the conflict with Moscow this week. So, on January 10, Wendy Sherman held talks with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov in Geneva. Consultations are scheduled for January 13 in Vienna within the framework of the Permanent Council of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
