The US could impose “tough economic sanctions” and deploy more of its military in Europe in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. A high-ranking representative of the American administration told reporters about this at a briefing in Washington, AFP reported on Monday, December 6.

The United States authorities are not considering a direct military response. Instead, in the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine, Washington will resort to a “combination” of methods: “support for the Ukrainian army, tough economic sanctions, and a significant increase in support and resources for NATO allies.”

Media: Washington allows sanctions against Putin’s entourage and disconnection of the Russian Federation from SWIFT

A spokesman for the US presidential administration, Joe Biden, declined to clarify what kind of sanctions could be discussed. The source of the Reuters news agency claims that they discussed, among other things, sanctions against the entourage of Russian President Vladimir Putin, but the final decision was not made.

Among possible penalties, the disconnection of Russia from the international payment system SWIFT is also being considered, adds CNN, citing sources familiar with the course of the discussions.

Reports of a possible Russian attack on Ukraine in early 2022

On December 7, Biden and Putin plan to video link the tensions around Ukraine and other international topics. On December 4, the AP agency reported that, according to American intelligence, Russia is planning an invasion of Ukraine, possibly as early as 2022 with the participation of 175,000 troops.

The Washington Post newspaper noted on the same day that the attack could occur simultaneously in several directions: from the north of the annexed Crimea, through the separatist-controlled territories in the east and from the northern border of Ukraine.
