/ A draft US resolution submitted to the Security Council regarding Gaza revealed a proposal from Washington for a “temporary ceasefire in the Strip as soon as possible,” while the draft resolution opposes the Israeli attack on Gaza and warns of “serious repercussions on regional peace and security.”

Reuters has seen a draft UN Security Council resolution proposed by the United States that “supports a temporary ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible.”

The US draft resolution said that a major ground assault on Rafah should not proceed under the current circumstances, as it would cause further harm to civilians and could lead to their displacement to neighboring countries. The draft considered that such a move “would have serious implications for regional peace and security.”

The project condemns Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, which killed about 1,200 people.

It was not immediately clear when or if the draft resolution would be put to a vote.

The United States put forward the text after Algeria requested a vote by the 15-member council on Tuesday on its draft resolution, which calls for an immediate ceasefire on humanitarian grounds.

On Saturday, the United States threatened to oppose the Algerian project, and the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, issued a statement condemning Algeria’s decision to refer the text to a vote.

The draft resolution rejects “the forced displacement of the Palestinian civilian population” and calls for the release of all hostages.

But, like previous texts that were criticized by Israel and its ally the United States, the draft resolution does not condemn the attack launched by Hamas.

The US representative considered that the Algerian move threatens to undermine the ongoing negotiations between Israel and Hamas, mediated by the US, Egypt and Qatar, to establish a new truce that includes the release of hostages held in Gaza and Palestinian detainees imprisoned in Israel.
