The debate over US President Joe Biden’s political future is gaining momentum among Democrats following his recent debate with Donald Trump. Despite Biden citing travel fatigue, his performance has raised concerns in liberal circles and questions about his continued participation in the presidential race.
DW writes about this.
Some Democrats, like Gavin Newsom, have expressed support for Biden, stressing the importance of unity at a critical moment. But Texas Rep. Lloyd Doggett has become the first sitting Democrat to call on Biden to resign, arguing that the president’s first priority should be the good of the country, the Associated Press reported.
Experts point out that replacing an incumbent president this late in the race would be unprecedented but possible, and would require Biden himself to decide to drop out, which Filippo Trevisan of American University in Washington, D.C., says is highly unlikely.
At the upcoming Democratic National Convention in August, delegates will be required to vote for the Democratic presidential nominee. If Biden declines to attend, it would lead to what is known as an “open convention,” where delegates would vote as they see fit.
Such a turn of events could open the door for other candidates, including Vice President Kamala Harris, though her connection to the current president could work both in her favor and against her in light of her similar approval ratings to Biden.
Analysts suggest that Biden is likely to remain in the race and try to win a second term despite the current discontent within the party and among voters. Much could change ahead, especially depending on the results of upcoming polls and voter reactions to recent political developments.
