The US Embassy and the Cuban Ministry of Culture (MINCULT) have joined forces to sponsor a cultural exchange with artists from Native American peoples in Havana.

The event is part of the celebrations for American Indian Culture Month, during which Rhiannon Murphy and Patrick Willie will arrive on the island.

The artists will offer two presentations, on November 26 and 28, at 7:00 pm, at the Miramar theater with free admission.

This Tuesday, the US diplomatic headquarters invited through its X account (formerly Twitter) to join “the celebration of the United States Indigenous Heritage Month in Cuba.”

In addition, he confirmed that “from November 25 to 29, two famous artists representing the indigenous peoples of the United States will arrive in Havana: Patrick Willie and Rhiannon Murphy. “They will complete an intense cultural exchange program.”

The state magazine La Jiribilla also promoted this collaboration between Cuban and American institutions, and added that “as part of their visit the dancers will visit cultural institutions, art schools and projects, to share experiences with the different age groups of the Caribbean nation.” .

Regarding Patrick Willie, the Cuban portal commented that he is a Native American from the Navajo tribe of Orem, Utah. His parents are from New Mexico. He has danced Powwow and Hoop all his life. Since he started hoop dancing he has been able to tour the world showing his art.

Currently, the artist performs at schools and events to spread Native American culture and fight stereotypes and for the past few years has competed in the Heard Museum’s World Indigenous Hoop Dance Competition, held in Phoenix, Arizona.

“Patrick has placed himself firmly within the top ten adult contestants each year. He has also applied many of the teachings of Hoop dance in his own life in spreading positive messages so that others listen, learn and exalt this manifestation of dance,” the text adds.

Rhiannon Murphy, for her part, is a Cherokee woman with Cuban roots, coming from the streets of Spanish Harlem, New York, and is not only a classically trained dancer, but also a traditional Native American dancer, showing her deep connection with her estate.

Murphy is a highly qualified choreographer, singer, percussionist, yoga instructor and martial artist with more than 30 years of experience. Her artistic life has taken her to prestigious institutions such as the Ballet Hispánico Dance School, the Dance Theater of Harlem School and the Alvin Ailey School, among others.

“This artist’s work embodies a true fusion of cultures, disciplines and experiences, which makes her a pioneer and inspiration for aspiring artists from all over the world of this dance manifestation,” adds La Jiribilla.

National Indian Heritage Month in the US was designated in 1990 by President George HW Bush through a resolution. During its celebrations, tribute is paid to the historical and cultural legacy of Native Americans and the native peoples of Alaska.
