The US government supports the use of open-source artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This is stated in a report by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) of the US Department of Commerce, published on the agency’s website, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
“The report recognizes the importance of open AI systems and calls for greater monitoring of the risks associated with their widespread availability,” NTIA Secretary Alan Davidson said in a statement. “The government must play a key role in supporting the development of AI while building capacity to address [связанных с ним] risks,” Davidson said.
According to the report, NTIA sees no reason to restrict companies that make their open source developments widely available. There is a debate among major players in the tech industry about the need to share data about their developments, the agency notes. In particular, the American company OpenAI, which presented the ChatGPT service, advocates for closing information about the internal processes of its developments to protect against abuse, while other representatives of the field, including Microsoft, support a more open approach.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden issued an executive order requiring developers of powerful AI systems to share safety testing results with US authorities. The document said that it applies to companies developing basic AI models that could potentially pose a “risk to the national and economic security of the United States” as well as to public health and safety.
