IAEA boss to inspect Zaporizhia plant next week

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, will visit the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant (south-eastern Ukraine), occupied by the Russians, this week.

This was the second visit by the top official of the United Nations nuclear monitoring agency to the plant, the largest in Europe, since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, in order to“directly assess the severity of the nuclear safety and security situation at the site”, explains a press release of the IAEA.

“Despite our presence on the site for seven months, the situation of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant remains precarious”said Mr. Grossi in the press release. “The dangers to nuclear safety and security are all too obvious, as is the need to act now to avoid an accident”he adds.

Mr. Grossi proposed to establish a security zone around the site. “I remain determined to continue to do everything in my power to help reduce the risk of a nuclear accident during the tragic war in Ukraine”he said.

A new group of IAEA experts will accompany Mr. Grossi, the agency having maintained a permanent presence at the plant since September. February rotation delayed nearly a month, IAEA says “the very difficult circumstances that the experts had to face”.
