US Health Officials Preparing for Rise in Respiratory Illnesses This Fall, Encourage Vaccinations Against COVID-19, Flu, and RSV

State and local health officials in the United States are preparing for an anticipated increase in respiratory illnesses this fall and are urging eligible individuals to get vaccinated against Covid-19, flu, and respiratory syncytial virus. Dr. Marcus Plescia, chief medical officer for the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, expressed concern about the upcoming respiratory season during a briefing. Local health departments, along with state and federal counterparts, will work together to encourage eligible individuals to get their flu shots, Covid-19 boosters, and RSV vaccines. The National Association of County and City Health Officials CEO, Lori Tremmel Freeman, emphasized the need for clear and integrated messaging, especially for high-risk individuals, in order to navigate the coexistence of multiple respiratory viruses. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is also preparing for the threat of respiratory illnesses and will use various strategies to inform and protect Americans. Pharmacy chains such as Walgreens, Rite Aid, and CVS have already started offering flu and RSV vaccine appointments and are preparing to administer Covid-19 boosters once approved. It is recommended that adults aged 60 and older receive the RSV vaccine as soon as advised by their doctors, and everyone over 6 months old should get their flu shots by Halloween. Health officials are awaiting official approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for the Covid-19 booster shot and subsequent recommendations from the CDC. The plan is to recommend Covid-19 boosters prior to Halloween. Dr. Manisha Juthani, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Public Health, suggested that the flu shot and the updated Covid-19 vaccine could potentially be administered simultaneously at a single appointment. Health officials stress the efficacy of vaccines in preventing severe outcomes and aim to prioritize public health and overall wellbeing during the respiratory season. In addition to pharmacies and doctor’s offices, some states are considering organizing vaccination events to reach more people. As the fall and winter seasons approach, state health officials are preparing for possible surges in flu, Covid-19, and RSV infections.
