The White House Chief Spokesperson, Vedant Patel, stated that they uphold the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary, which are significant in democracy. The US is keeping a close eye on the case against Rahul Gandhi and shares common values with India in maintaining democratic dignity and freedom of expression. The US wants to maintain amicable relationships with opposition parties in countries they have good relations with, said Patel.
Recently, a Surat court sentenced Rahul Gandhi, a senior leader of Congress, to two years of imprisonment in a defamation case. As a result, he was disqualified from his MP position. Opposition parties, including Congress, have been severely criticizing the central government led by Prime Minister Modi on this matter. However, according to the constitution, the court had given the sentence, and the BJP counters with a claim that the central government was not involved.
Despite the opposition parties’ protests, including Congress, carrying banners with “Black Day of Democracy,” and other demonstrations, the court’s decision stands.

It is one of the democratic principles in both countries. The United States wants to maintain friendly relations with the opposition parties of countries with which it maintains good relations,” he said.
