US military and diplomatic leaders hold extensive meetings in Libya

The head of the unity government, Abdel Hamid Dbeibah, discussed with the US Ambassador, Jeremy Brent, and the commander of AFRICOM, the threats surrounding Libya and the presence of forces with suspicious movements.

This came during a meeting held today in Tripoli, during a series of visits made by the American commander and the ambassador with several local parties.

Dbeibah welcomed cooperation with the United States and the unification of security and military efforts in Libya to confront any actions aimed at destabilizing the country.

Dabaiba stressed the need to work seriously with local and international parties to secure the borders in the south and eliminate suspicious movements.

For its part, the American delegation presented a position on Washington’s concerns about the threats surrounding Libya due to the deteriorating security situation in several countries and the presence of forces with suspicious movements.

In another meeting, Presidential Council Chairman Mohamed Al-Menfi discussed with the AFRICOM Commander and the US Ambassador ways to develop security and military cooperation between the two countries and exchange expertise in the field of combating terrorism and organized crime and monitoring and controlling borders.

During a meeting with the Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Mohammed Al-Haddad, and his assistant, Lieutenant General Salah Al-Din Al-Namroush, the AFRICOM Commander and the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy discussed cooperation between the two countries in combating terrorism, border security, and implementing a number of joint training programs to raise the efficiency of the Libyan army personnel.

On Tuesday, the US ambassador and AFRICOM commander met with Khalifa Haftar in Benghazi, and expressed their desire to hold a series of meetings with “defense and security leaders in the west and east to discuss how the United States can contribute to unifying Libya’s military forces and securing the country’s sovereignty.”
