/ The US Central Command denounced, on Saturday, the Houthis’ “ignorance” of the “regional impact” of their attacks, which it described as “random” in the Red Sea, announcing an “environmental disaster” that had befallen the sea.

CENTCOM said in a statement issued late last night that an attack by the Yemeni Houthis on the cargo ship Rubimar on February 18 caused severe damage to the ship and an oil spill 18 miles (about 29 km) long.

CENTCOM confirmed that the UK-owned, Belize-flagged cargo ship “is at anchor but is slowly taking on water.”

She pointed out that the ship was transporting more than 41,000 tons of fertilizers when it was attacked, “which could lead to a leak into the Red Sea, which could exacerbate this environmental disaster.”

CENTCOM denounced the Houthis’ “ignorance” of the “regional impact of their indiscriminate attacks and the resulting threat to the fishing sector, coastal communities, and food supply imports.”

Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said in a statement the day after the attack that the Houthis had targeted the ship in the Gulf of Aden, and indicated that it was in danger of sinking.
