The New York Times quoted US officials as saying that the Wagner Group, which previously sent armored vehicles and conducted training in Sudan in exchange for lucrative gold mining concessions, offered powerful weapons, including surface-to-air missiles, to Hemedti’s paramilitary forces.

US officials said Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, better known as Hamidti, had not decided until Friday whether to accept the weapons that would come from Wagner stocks in the Central African Republic.

The New York Times reported that since 2019 Wagner has expanded its activities in Sudan for gold mining, uranium exploration and supply of mercenaries in the troubled Darfur region.

After the two generals seized power in 2021, it intensified its partnership with General Hamdan, who visited Moscow during the early days of the war against Ukraine and received military equipment from the mercenary group.
