New York: India’s Yuki Bhambri and France’s Albano Olivetti made a brilliant comeback after losing the first set to defeat Austin Krajicek and Jean-Julien Rojer and enter the third round of the US Open men’s doubles tennis tournament. Bhambri and Olivetti defeated the 15th seeded pair of America’s Krajicek and Netherlands’ Jean-Julien Rojer 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. This is only the second time Bhambri has reached the third round of a Grand Slam tournament. He had earlier reached the same stage at the Australian Open in 2014.
The pair of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden also did wonders
The second seeded pair of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden also reached the third round with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena and Argentina’s Federico Coria. Another Indian player N Sriram Balaji and his Argentine partner Guido Andreozzi crashed out of the tournament after losing to New Zealand’s Michael Venus and Great Britain’s Neal Skupski in the second round. The Indian and Argentine pair lost the second round match 6-7 (4), 4-6. Venus and Skupski got seven break points out of which they converted one. Balaji and Andreozzi failed to convert their only opportunity of service break.
Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic also out
After Spain’s star tennis player Carlos Alcaraz was eliminated in the men’s singles, defending champion Novak Djokovic has also been eliminated from the US Open. He was defeated by Australia’s Alexei Popyrin 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. After the match, Djokovic said, “To be honest, this is my worst performance till date. This match was like a nightmare for me. I could not play even close to my best.”
