ROMA. Comeback victory for Jannik Sinnernumber 1 in the ATP ranking, in his debut match at the US Open against the American Mackenzie McDonald (n.140).
The South Tyrolean, who appeared tense at the start of the match, lost the first set 2-6 and then won with a peremptory 6-2, 6-1, 6-2 and qualified for the second round.
Many mistakes by the world number 1 who appears very tense on the court: the waste products of the last week with the doping affair and the reactions seem to be slowing him down.
Then, in the second set, after an uphill start, the comeback: Sinner raises the level and reacts by leaving just 5 games to the unfortunate McDonald in the next three sets. “I didn’t start in the best way but the first match is never easy”, the words of the South Tyrolean at the end of the match. “I tried to get into rhythm, I’m happy with the victory and the reaction – he added – I finally managed to win on the center court after several matches, it means a lot to me. Tomorrow I’ll rest and try to find a little more rhythm, there’s a lot to improve”.
Sinner then thanked the crowd “for the support which is always incredible, thank you for staying to cheer for me”.
