Tel Aviv: As the war between Israel and Hamas intensifies, US President Joe Biden arrived in Israel on Wednesday to demonstrate unwavering support for the Israeli government and its people, confirmed US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally welcomed Biden at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, emphasizing the importance of the visit amidst the ongoing conflict.

Following their arrival, Biden and Netanyahu held discussions at the Ministry of Defense in Tel Aviv. The two leaders later conducted a joint interview with the press, addressing the escalating violence.

Expressing his condolences, Biden stated, “I was deeply saddened and outraged to learn of yesterday’s bombing of a hospital in Gaza. Based on what I have seen, this attack appears to have been carried out by other groups, not you (Israel).”

Biden reiterated the purpose of his visit, emphasizing, “I’m here for one simple reason. I want the people of Israel and the world to know where America stands. They (Hamas) are ISIS. Worse than terrorists. They have committed evil and atrocities. America will ensure that Israel has what it needs to defend itself.”

In a pivotal move, the United States pledged $100 million (approx. Rs. 832 crore) in funding for humanitarian operations in Gaza and the West Bank, reiterating its commitment to alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people.

Netanyahu expressed his gratitude to Biden for his support during these challenging times. He characterized the ongoing conflict as a battle between the forces of civilization and barbarism, calling on other nations to align themselves with Israel.

Meanwhile, Biden had plans to seek Arab support for Israel’s defense through a summit with Arab leaders in Jordan’s capital, Amman. However, the meeting had to be canceled due to the bombing of a Gaza hospital, according to Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Sabadi.

Recognizing the severity of the situation, the US military announced the deployment of additional warships to the Mediterranean to assist Israel in case of further escalation. Notably, the largest US warship is already stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Concurrently, the United States imposed economic sanctions on ten members of Hamas, further demonstrating its commitment to combatting terrorism and supporting Israel’s security.

In a gesture towards easing the humanitarian crisis, Israel declared it would permit Egypt to provide limited aid to the Gaza Strip.

As the world closely watches the events unfolding in the region, Biden’s visit serves as a reassurance of US support for Israel in its pursuit of stability and security.
