Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement Thursday night that the presidential election results presented by the “Maduro-controlled” National Electoral Council (CNE) are deeply flawed.
“The CNE’s hasty declaration of Maduro as the winner of the presidential election came without presenting any evidence. The failure to present the minutes, as well as other irregularities during the process, have taken away any credibility,” the text reads.
“Given the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to the United States, and more importantly to the Venezuelan people, that Edmundo González received the most votes in the July 28 presidential election.”
“It is time for both sides to begin discussions for a peaceful and respectful transition in accordance with electoral law and the wishes of the Venezuelan people. We fully support the restoration of democratic norms in Venezuela and stand ready to consider ways to strengthen it alongside other international partners,” Blinken said.
