The US Supreme Court has ruled that US prosecutors brought improper charges against several hundred people who were detained as part of the investigation into the storming of the Capitol in early 2021, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

The highest US court has announced a verdict that the competent authorities had no grounds to bring charges of obstructing official government proceedings against those arrested in connection with the invasion of the US Congress on January 6, 2021. Meanwhile, such charges have been brought against more than 350 detainees.

In addition, the current Supreme Court decision, adopted by a vote of 6 to 3, potentially signals the possibility of a favorable development for the previous US President Donald Trump in his case regarding the storming of the Capitol. US Special Prosecutor Jack Smith announced in August last year that he had brought charges against Trump in this case under four articles. The former head of the US administration is effectively accused of trying to retain power despite losing the November 2020 election through illegal actions.

Current American President Joe Biden, a Democrat, won the 2020 election against Republican Trump. The latter was seeking re-election as head of the administration. Trump fiercely contested the outcome of that vote. Supporters of the politician, who gathered in Washington on January 6, 2021, for a multi-thousand demonstration in his support, stormed Congress, attempting to prevent the certification of the election results.

Democrats in Congress have accused Trump of inciting insurrection. Some Republicans have made similar comments. In protest of Trump’s actions and the riots on Capitol Hill that left several people dead, a number of officials from the previous US government have resigned.
