US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken arrived in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Wednesday morning to discuss efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas.

According to Agence France-Presse, “Blinken is scheduled to meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo, and will also participate with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdel-Ati, in “chairing the opening of the US-Egyptian strategic dialogue.”

According to Washington, “This strategic dialogue aims to strengthen bilateral relations and deepen economic development, as well as consolidate relations between the peoples of the two countries through culture and education.”

According to Agence France-Presse, “American officials admit that they do not expect a breakthrough during the talks that Blinken will hold in Cairo,” but the latter, “Blinken,” wants, through his visit to Egypt, “to continue to pressure towards reaching an agreement (truce).”

Egypt, along with the United States and Qatar, is playing a key role in the ongoing mediation to stop the war between Israel and Hamas.

It is noteworthy that “this is Blinken’s tenth visit to the region since the war between Israel and Hamas began about a year ago, and the visit will not include Israel or any other country,” according to Agence France-Presse.

The US State Department announced that Blinken will discuss with Egyptian officials “the ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza that ensures the release of all hostages, alleviates the suffering of the Palestinian people, and helps establish broader regional security.”

The death toll from the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza has risen by 348 to 41,252 dead and 95,497 wounded.
