A group of Democratic congressmen called on the administration of US President Joe Biden to reduce spending on nuclear weapons. The senators’ letter says the fiscal 2022 budget request is not in line with efforts to reduce the country’s dependence on such weapons.

Congressmen gratefully recalled Biden’s “longstanding efforts” to reduce the likelihood of nuclear war and reduce the role of nuclear weapons in the country’s security policy. However, senators expressed concern that the 2022 budget request does not reflect this nuclear weapons policy.

“Within the framework of this budget, it is planned to use $ 634 billion over ten years to restore all delivery vehicles, weapons and warheads in the US nuclear arsenal,” the authors of the letter said.

The draft budget maintains or increases spending on every nuclear weapons program proposed by the administration of former United States President Donald Trump.

“We ask you to reverse the decisions of the Trump administration to increase spending on expensive, unnecessary and very dangerous nuclear weapons,” the senators summed up.

The initiative group also called on the head of the White House to create a strategy on nuclear weapons that would limit the role of such weapons in national security issues and “reduce unnecessary costs”, as well as “lay the foundation for the implementation of recent agreements with Russian President Vladimir Putin on additional arms control “.

On September 5, the US, UK and Australia announced a security partnership for the Indo-Pacific. It will include helping Australia acquire nuclear submarines as China’s influence in the region grows.

US officials and experts said Australia does not currently have the necessary fissile material to operate a nuclear submarine, meaning that nuclear material transfers will be discussed over the next year and a half.

In January, former United States Secretary of Defense William Perry called on newly elected President Joe Biden to reform the control system over the American nuclear arsenal.

In December last year, the Joe Biden administration announced its intention to revise the $ 1.2 trillion nuclear modernization program with the expectation of cutting funding and reducing its role in the Pentagon’s strategy. Then the former official noted that it was not possible to spend the above-mentioned amounts on the program.
