Just over a week before the visit of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to the US, nine members of the Democratic Party presented a resolution in the Senate asking President Joe Biden to promptly examine the extradition requests of former Brazilian officials linked to to the coup attacks against the headquarters of the three Powers in Brasilia, on January 8.
The wording of the text obtained by Sheet It was led by Senator Bob Menéndez, Chairman of the House Foreign Relations Committee. The material seeks to blame former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) for having motivated what he calls a “violent siege” of the institutions.
“We condemn the attack perpetrated against the Planalto Palace, the Parliament and the Supreme Court of Brazil by supporters of the former president, an act that was fueled, in part, by the disinformation disseminated for several months by Bolsonaro,” says an excerpt from the missive.
The former president has been in the US since the end of December and, according to his lawyers, he requested a tourist visa to stay longer in the country – the modality entitles him to six months on US soil.
