An American soldier who ran across the border into the North Korea in July “he admitted that he did it illegally”, reported, this Wednesday (Tuesday night, 15, in Brazil) the North Korean state news agency KCNA. That was North Korea’s first public reaction to the case of soldier Travis King, who, according to press reports, is 23 years old.

King was supposed to have returned to the United States to face disciplinary action after being involved in a bar fight, getting into an argument with the police and spending a brief period in a South Korean prison.

Instead of boarding a plane for the United States, however, the soldier joined a tour of the Demilitarized Zone, which separates the two Koreas, and fled across the border.

“During the investigation, Travis King confessed that he had decided to go to North Korea because he resented the mistreatment and racial discrimination within the US Army,” KCNA said.

The United States has no formal diplomatic relations with North Korea. Since the North Koreans closed their borders at the start of the pandemic, most embassies with a presence in Pyongyang have withdrawn their diplomats.
