The Republic of Korea (ROK), the United States and Japan intend to create within a year a tripartite mechanism for overseeing the implementation of UN Security Council sanctions against the DPRK, an alternative to the UN expert group whose mandate expired in the spring. Director of the Strategy and Analysis Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea Cho Gu-rye, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink, Director of the Asia-Oceania Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan Hiroyuki Namazu held telephone talks on August 7. “The work of the expert group on sanctions against North Korea ended as a result of Russia’s use of the veto, but the Republic of Korea, the United States and Japan agreed to accelerate consultations to establish and launch within a year an alternative mechanism that will [позволял бы] “more strictly monitor the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions regarding North Korea,” Seoul reported following the talks.

Representatives of the three countries also discussed cooperation between Russia and the DPRK, condemned Pyongyang’s “ongoing provocations,” including ballistic missile launches, and declared their commitment to the task of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.
