The Voice of America (VOA) reported on the 14th that the U.S. government criticized the meeting between the Russian security chief and North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong-un, saying that expanded cooperation between North Korea and Russia undermines the stability of the international nonproliferation regime.

According to the broadcast, the U.S. State Department expressed such serious concerns in response to VOA’s request for comment on the previous day’s meeting between Russian State Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu and North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong Un.

A State Department spokesperson said of Secretary Shoigu’s visit to North Korea and meeting with Chairman Kim, “The deepening of cooperation between Russia and North Korea is a trend that should be of grave concern to all who are interested in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, upholding the international nonproliferation regime, and supporting the Ukrainian people in their effort to defend themselves against Russia’s brutal war.”

The spokesperson stressed that “the expansion of military cooperation between North Korea and Russia undermines regional stability and the global nonproliferation regime.”

The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs also stated regarding Secretary Shoigu’s visit to North Korea, “We strongly condemn the intensification of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.”

The Foreign Ministry then criticized North Korea for “stopping the export of weapons and missiles to Russia,” saying, “These weapons are being used by Russia to prolong the suffering of the Ukrainian people in its war against Ukraine.”

Meanwhile, North Korea’s state-run media reported that Chairman Kim Jong-un met with Secretary Shoigu on the 13th and confirmed that they would expand cooperation as strategic partners.

The media reported that Chairman Kim welcomed Shoigu and exchanged opinions in a warm, friendly and trustworthy atmosphere.

Secretary Shoigu discussed and reached a consensus on continuing to deepen strategic dialogue between North Korea and Russia, strengthen cooperation to safeguard mutual interests, and regional and international situations, the media added.
