Some people are convinced that electric cars are less prone to repairs than combustion engines. A US study now shows: the opposite is the case.

Electric cars have fewer components than combustion vehicles. So – at least in theory – there can be less wear and less damage as a result. But according to a recent study by a US market research company JD Power This is a false assumption: The data evaluated shows that electric cars and plug-in hybrids require more repairs than combustion vehicles in all repair categories.

E-cars and plug-in hybrids require dealer repairs three times more often than combustion engines

“Owners of high-tech BEVs and PHEVs face such severe problems that they are three times more likely to take their new vehicle to a dealer than owners of gasoline-powered vehicles,” said Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking. at JD Power. Another study not long ago came to the same conclusion: it also showed that electric cars need to go to the workshop more often than combustion vehicles.

In the JD-Power-Studie Not only were repair visits to authorized dealers examined, but customers were also asked about their opinions about their vehicles. The following problems arose, among others:

  • Besieged by warnings: Many car owners do not understand why their vehicle is warning them. Many people misunderstood the “rear seat reminder”: This system is intended to prevent children or pets from being accidentally left in the back seat – but some people believed that the technology warns if a seat belt is not fastened. Other assistance systems that are actually intended to save lives and reduce injuries – such as the reversing assistant, which will be mandatory in the EU from 7 July 2024 – have put drivers off with inaccurate warnings.

  • Difficulties with operation: Even simple functions such as turning on the windshield wiper or adjusting the rearview mirror cause problems for users in modern vehicles. The same goes for manufacturers’ smartphone apps – here too, electric cars have had particular problems. One example that, according to the study, is making many people angry is that Tesla has changed its operation: the turn signal is now operated through the steering wheel.
  • Stuff on the inside: One problem that is becoming more common, according to the research, is vehicle stench. The owners describe that the annoying smells come from heating, air conditioning or ventilation. The odor problem has worsened compared to 2023 for all brands – except Kia and Nissan.
