The United States is suspending a $95 million aid program for Georgia as part of a review of cooperation in connection with Tbilisi’s adoption of the Foreign Agents Act, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, Reuters reports, Day.Az reports with reference to RBC.

“The Georgian government’s anti-democratic actions and false statements are incompatible with the norms of EU and NATO membership,” Blinken explained, promising that Washington would continue to provide some assistance that would help Georgian citizens.

The ruling Georgian Dream party passed a law on foreign agents in the spring, which was sharply criticized by the opposition, the United States and the European Union, which warned that the changes would hinder bilateral relations with the West.

“Frankly, this legislation, which looks like it’s straight out of the Kremlin’s playbook, is targeting humanitarian organizations, NGOs, human rights defenders, journalists. And that’s something we’re certainly going to be paying close attention to,” the State Department said in late July.
