With the inauguration of the Donald Trump administration just two weeks away, the U.S. Department of Defense announced that it does not expect any changes in the role of U.S. troops stationed in Korea or the ROK-U.S. alliance.

When asked at a regular briefing on the 3rd (local time) whether she expected there to be a change in the role of US troops stationed in Korea, US Department of Defense Deputy Spokesperson Sabrina Singh replied, “The short answer is ‘no.’”

Deputy Spokesperson Singh went on to explain, “In the field of military cooperation, we have an ironclad commitment to South Korea,” adding, “Such channels of communication remain good, and South Korea is a valuable partner to the U.S. presence in the Indo-Pacific.”

He added, “That’s why I don’t expect any changes to that (the role of U.S. forces in Korea).”

This is interpreted as an assessment that there will be no change in the posture of US troops stationed in Korea even after President-elect Donald Trump takes office on the 20th.

In response to a question about Korea’s domestic situation, Deputy Spokesperson Singh emphasized, “There is no change in the ROK-US alliance as far as military cooperation is concerned.”

In addition, he stated, “Issues occurring within Korea and military problems are certainly issues that we must keep an eye on, but those are issues that Korea must resolve on its own.”

“I can only talk about the military cooperation between the two countries, which is still strong,” he said. “It will continue even after the current administration.”
