US to announce sanctions ahead of Summit for Democracy

by time news

The US Treasury will impose a series of sanctions next week as part of the “Summit for Democracy,” an administration spokesman told The Wall Street Journal. They will concern officials of foreign governments and others accused of corruption and human rights violations.

Washington does not say exactly against whom the restrictions will be imposed. The US authorities see sanctions as an “important tool” in the White House’s efforts to stimulate “democratic renewal” around the world, the newspaper reports. The Joe Biden administration intends to prioritize coordinated international action, as it “is critical in ensuring the effectiveness of sanctions.” The Ministry of Finance announced that it intends to propose to eliminate loopholes in the legislation that allow corrupt officials to use the real estate market.

The Summit for Democracy will take place from 9 to 10 December. Washington invited 110 countries to it. Russia and China are not on the invite list. Moscow and Beijing called the summit “a product of the Cold War mentality.”
