US to offer UN moratorium on anti-satellite weapons testing

by time news

In September, the US authorities will submit a resolution to the UN calling for an end to anti-satellite missile tests. This was announced by the chairman of the US National Space Council, Vice President Kamala Harris.

“In April, I announced that our country would not test destructive direct-lift anti-satellite missiles. Later this month, the US will present a resolution to the UN General Assembly calling on other countries to make the same commitment,” Ms. Harris said at the committee meeting.

The US authorities announced a moratorium on testing anti-satellite weapons in April 2022. According to Ms. Harris, the US plans to set new standards for work in space.

On November 15, 2021, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced a test that hit the inactive Russian spacecraft Tselina-D, which had been in orbit since the 1980s. US State Department spokesman Ned Price said that after the tests, debris appeared in Earth’s orbit, threatening the International Space Station.

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergei Lavrov, then said: “To say that the Russian Federation creates risks for the activities of the peaceful use of outer space is at least hypocrisy.”

In November 2021, the former head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, said that Russia in modern conditions should have anti-satellite weapons. In April 2022, he stated that the use of such weapons on the spacecraft of another country could start a third world war.
