The 23-year-old man, along with three of his family members, went to the top of a high-altitude volcano in the southern Italian city of Naples. NBC reported in its report that the tourist was taking a selfie at the top of the volcano when his cell phone slipped from his hand and fell into the mouth of the volcano. As he fell several meters into the ditch, he suffered multiple injuries on his hands and back and other minor injuries on other parts of his body.
Paolo Cappelli, head of the Presidio Permanente Vesuvio, a base for guides, said tourists had passed through the blocked passage. And Cappelli said that the family had reached the summit of Vesuvius from the town of Ottaviano, and that they had reached the top of the volcano by a forbidden path. He said the tourists ignored the no-admission signs and took another route.

Fortunately, Vesuvius’ tour guides were the first to jump in to rescue the man. As a first step they went down into the pit to pull out the man who had fallen into the pit. The police rushed to the spot and rescued the tourist with a helicopter. Kappel then said the man was very lucky because if he had kept going he would have plunged 300 meters into the abyss.
It has been learned that the tourist and his three relatives will now face action against them for trespassing on public land and for visiting the volcano without any ticket.
