Hackers believed to be sponsored by the Chinese government hacked the U.S. Treasury and stole some documents.

AFP reported on the 30th (local time) that a hacker attempted to hack early this month and accessed the Treasury workstation and some documents.

According to AFP, hackers remotely obtained some unclassified documents by hacking BeyondTrust, a third-party company that provides cybersecurity services to the U.S. Treasury. After receiving this fact from Beyond Trust on the 8th, the Treasury Department notified the U.S. Cyber Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the U.S. Senate Banking Committee.

The Ministry of Finance evaluated this incident as using the ‘Advanced Persistent Attack (APT)’ method, which selects a specific target such as a country or company and attacks for a long period of time until success. The compromised service was then taken offline, and there was no evidence that hackers continued to access Treasury systems.

A Treasury Department spokesperson said, “We believe this was the work of a Chinese-sponsored APT actor,” and added, “We will disclose more details in a report to be submitted to Congress.”

Last October, it was reported that a hacker organization linked to the Chinese government had intercepted the phone calls of U.S. political figures. According to the New York Times (NYT), the targets of the hackers’ attack included then-presidential candidate Donald Trump and his family members, Republican Senator JD Vance, and Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign staff.
