DETROIT (Reuters) – The United Auto Workers (UAW) expanded its strikes against Detroit automakers to General Motors (NYSE:) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (NYSE:), but kept the strike at Ford (NYSE:) limited to a single factory, due to progress made in negotiations, the union said on Friday.

The auto workers union began strikes on Friday against 38 GM and Stellantis parts distribution centers in the United States, expanding its simultaneous and unprecedented demonstrations.

The movements at additional units added about 5,600 workers to the 12,700 who were already on strike.

UAW President Shawn Fain said in a Facebook (NASDAQ:) live event that by targeting distribution centers, the strike becomes a national event. He said he expected negotiations to continue through the weekend.

Hours after Fain invited President Joe Biden to visit a picket line, Biden said in a post on social media X, formerly known as Twitter, that he would go to Michigan on Tuesday “to join the picket line and stand in solidarity with the men and women of the UAW.”

He added, “It’s time for a win-win deal that keeps American automotive manufacturing thriving with good-paying UAW jobs.”

The president has expressed his support for the union’s demands for better wages and benefits.

Former President Donald Trump, who is seeking a new term, will be in Michigan on Wednesday to speak to auto workers, according to his campaign.

Fain said the decision to expand the strike would affect consumers trying to obtain repair parts. Distribution centers are warehouses that ship parts to dealerships and other retailers for use in repairs.
