Brazil emphasizes that it made “every effort possible”

MADRID, 18 (EUROPA PRESS)

This Wednesday, the United States vetoed a resolution presented by Brazil to the United Nations Security Council to establish “humanitarian pauses” and allow the delivery of aid to civilians in the Gaza Strip after more than a week of bombing by Israel. within the framework of the last open war with the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) since October 7.

The resolution, which also called for the revocation of the order imposed by Israel for civilians in the area to move to the southern Gaza Strip, also demanded the release of the hostages taken by Hamas during its incursion into Israeli territory. .

The text provided for facilitating access to the area by humanitarian organizations and UN agencies, while advocating for the establishment of humanitarian corridors.

In addition, it called for the provision of essential goods and services to civilians, including electricity, water, fuel, food and medical supplies, with the aim of “ensuring that civilians are not deprived of items essential for their survival.” , as the UN itself has pointed out in a statement.

In the resolution, the Council condemned the attacks by the Palestinian armed group against Israel and emphasized respect for international law by both sides. Likewise, it served as a call to avoid “collateral effects” in the region.

The document was made with twelve votes in favor – compared to the abstention of Russia and the United Kingdom – after the vote was postponed twice in recent days as the United States negotiates the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza .

Previously, the Security Council had rejected an amendment presented by Russia to that same resolution calling for “an immediate ceasefire” in the region.

For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Mauro Vieira, regretted the United States’ decision to veto his proposal, which, he explained, was “basically focused on the cessation of hostilities.”

“I think that from our point of view, from our presidency, we made every possible effort to ensure that hostilities ceased, human sacrifices stopped and some type of assistance could be given to the local population,” he said.

“Our concern has always been the humanitarian issue and each one will have their own motivation,” said Vieira, who assured that during the preparation of the Brazilian proposal the rest of the States of the Security Council were counted on to make it “more acceptable to all”.
