The United States is withdrawing almost all of its military personnel from Ukraine. This was reported on Saturday, February 12, by the AFP agency with reference to the press secretary of the US defense department, John Kirby.

According to him, the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, “ordered the temporary redeployment of 160 Florida National Guard troops,” who advised the Ukrainian military.

US soldiers, who Kirby said are being withdrawn in the interest of “personnel safety,” will be redeployed to other positions in Europe.

Austin and Shoigu held telephone conversations

Since 2015, the US National Guard reservists, together with representatives of other NATO countries, in particular Canada and Germany, have been advising and training the military personnel of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

“The redeployment does not mean a change in our resolve to support the armed forces of Ukraine, but will provide flexibility in helping allies and deterring aggression,” AFP quoted Kirby as saying.

On Saturday, February 12, Lloyd Austin had telephone conversations with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. As pointed out in the Pentagon, the parties discussed “Russia’s build-up of forces in the Crimea and around Ukraine.”

West fears Russian invasion of Ukraine

In recent months, relations between Russia and Western countries have remained tense. The West is talking about the concentration of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border and the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Kremlin denies plans for military aggression.

The January series of talks between Russia and the United States, NATO and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe did not bring the desired results. The West is calling on Moscow to withdraw troops from the Ukrainian border and is threatening unprecedented sanctions. Russia, on the other hand, accuses Western countries of arming Ukraine and conducting maneuvers near the borders of the Russian Federation.

Der Spiegel: US warns of imminent Russian attack on Ukraine

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said earlier that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could begin “at any moment.” According to the German weekly Der Spiegel, the US intelligence agencies, based on the latest data, fear that it could happen as early as February 16th. The American side warned the German government and other NATO countries about this, the newspaper wrote.

Presidents of the United States and Russia Joseph Biden and Vladimir Putin are scheduled to hold telephone conversations on February 12.
