Huge fire in the US: At least 19 people have been killed, including children, in a huge fire that broke out today (Sunday) in a residential building in the Bronx borough of New York. Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the death toll said “this is going to be one of the worst fires seen in modern times in New York City.”
The New York Fire Department has reported that 63 casualties have been identified so far and that at least 32 occupants have been seriously injured, including nine in critical condition and 22 in critical to severe condition. According to reports, of the 19 killed there are at least nine children.

About 200 firefighters were called to a 19-story building in the West Bronx around 11 a.m. after a fire broke out on the third floor and spread to other floors. According to reports, the building contains apartments that have been converted into duplexes and access to some areas has been difficult.
Firefighters battled the flames while working to rescue the trapped using ladders. In the harsh photos from the scene, tenants were seen calling for help from inside the building and there were even reports of tenants jumping to the ground in an attempt to escape the fire.

“The smoke conditions inside the building were unprecedented,” New York Fire Commissioner Dan Negro said at a news conference with new mayor Eric Adams, who came to follow the fire, which was defined as one of the worst in the city’s history.
Crystal Diaz, 27, who lives on the 15th floor, said she grabbed her aunt, her cousins and the dog and rushed to flee the apartment. “I drank coffee in the living room and started smelling smoke,” she repeated. “We put water on towels under the door. Everything was crazy. We did not know what to do. We looked out the window and saw bodies being taken on stretchers.” “We saw mothers fainting after seeing their children dying,” added niece Alani (13).
