The United States has not yet issued visas to Russian ambassadors to attend the United Nations annual meeting, which is scheduled to be held in New York. Russia had requested visas for 56 people led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Russia said the letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was shocking. The 1947 United Nations Headquarters Agreement requires the United States to allow foreign government officials to participate in United Nations meetings.
The United States has explained that permission may be denied based on reasons such as security, terrorism, and foreign policy. The United States has already denied Russian government officials permission to participate in some of the UN’s programs.
The US State Department said Washington takes responsibility for its obligations as the host country of the United Nations. It is noteworthy that the 77th meeting of the United Nations will begin on the 13th of this month.
This has caused a stir between Russia and the United States.
