Egyptian banks remain closed for the weekly holiday on Saturday, August 8, 2026, leaving official exchange rates steady across the domestic market.

As the domestic banking sector observes its scheduled weekend closure, foreign exchange rates for the Egyptian pound remain fixed at the levels recorded during the final trading sessions of the past week.

Across major state-owned and private financial institutions, the U.S. dollar is holding steady against the pound following adjustments earlier in the week. Currency boards and trading screens show minor variations depending on the institution, reflecting standard commercial spreads rather than new market movement.

In the central banking sector, the Central Bank of Egypt posted an exchange rate of 49.71 pounds for purchase and 49.85 pounds for sale. Commercial lenders such as the National Bank of Egypt and Banque Misr reported purchase rates at 49.74 pounds and selling rates at 49.84 pounds. Meanwhile, institutions operating at the upper end of the retail market, including Emirates NBD, registered higher figures, with purchase prices reaching 50.40 pounds and selling prices touching 50.50 pounds. At the other end of the spectrum, Bank of Alexandria recorded some of the lowest rates in the market, quoting 49.64 pounds for purchase and 49.74 pounds for sale.

Regional currencies are experiencing a similar pause. The Saudi riyal is maintaining a steady average across the banking system, trading around 13.24 pounds for purchase and 13.28 pounds for sale at the central bank, with individual commercial banks reporting tight margins around those figures.

The current stability in exchange rates coincides with positive macroeconomic indicators released by financial authorities. Over the prior 11-month period, reserves expanded year-on-year, representing a growth rate of 31.2%.

Further bolstering state coffers, the Egyptian government secured a disbursement from the International Monetary Fund under an ongoing three-year Extended Fund Facility, complemented by an additional allocation from the sustainability fund.

International Assessments and Economic Outlook

International Monetary Fund Release on the Egyptian Economy

International financial monitors view Egypt’s recent economic performance through the lens of external geopolitical challenges. The International Monetary Fund stated in a release that the Egyptian economy remained resilient in the face of fallout from the Middle East conflict, supported by rapid and decisive policy responses, including exchange rate flexibility, fuel price adjustments, and government spending containment measures. The Fund added that maintaining an appropriately tight monetary policy, continued fiscal discipline, and the execution of the state ownership policy and divestment program will be essential to preserve macroeconomic stability and foster resilience. Furthermore, the IMF noted that Egypt confronted regional war spillovers from a stronger macroeconomic position than during previous external stress episodes, with the economic impact remaining relatively limited.

Complementing this assessment, a report issued by credit rating agency Fitch Ratings noted that exchange rate flexibility in Egypt played a pivotal role in absorbing the fallout from foreign capital outflows, helping reinforce policy credibility and mitigating the impact of tensions linked to the Iran-US-Israel conflict on Egypt’s sovereign rating, which stands at ‘B’ with a stable outlook.

At the same time, the International Monetary Fund projected that the inflation rate would rise to 16.7% in the second half of 2026 due to increased energy prices and currency depreciation, alongside a roughly one-year delay in achieving the central bank’s inflation targets. The IMF also forecasted that Egypt’s economic growth would slow to 4.4% during the 2026/2027 fiscal year as a consequence of ongoing regional conflict and weak external demand.
