Microsoft released an update for Windows 11, after installing which users began to massively complain about the appearance of advertising in the Start menu. This was reported by The Verge, Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru.
The update has build number KB5036980. Its release took place on April 23, 2024. At the moment, the update is optional, however, according to The Verge, over time Microsoft will make it mandatory.
After installing KB5036980, advertisements appear in the Recommendations section of the Start menu. Ads are icons of applications that Microsoft invites users to try. In particular, the IT corporation promotes the 1Password password manager in this way. Microsoft believes that the new feature will allow many people to discover “great new programs.”
“Microsoft has been experimenting with advertising inside Windows for more than 10 years. Ad inserts are already present on the lock screen and in the Start menu of Windows 10, so it is not surprising that banners will appear in Windows 11,” The Verge noted.
Although Start menu ads are automatically turned on after the update, you can turn them off in Windows 11’s Experience Personalization settings.
