CHENNAI: There have been complaints that some people who have agricultural electricity connections are using free electricity to siphon ground water and sell it to drinking water supply companies.

Tamil Nadu Electricity Board distributes free electricity to 23 lakh agricultural connections. 5,300 crore rupees annually incurred for this purpose is provided by the Tamil Nadu government as a subsidy. There have been complaints that some are taking water from agricultural lands and selling it to drinking water supply companies.

An official of the Electricity Board said:

3-phase electricity is provided to agriculture daily, 12 hours a day.

It has been reported that some people who have agricultural electricity connection are using the free electricity and selling water to drinking water, chemical industries and construction companies instead of doing tillage work.

For this, there have been complaints of charging Rs 500-1,000 per truckload of water. It will be scorching hot in the coming days. This will further increase the sale of water.

Therefore, in order to prevent the sale of water for free electricity, a committee of high officials should be formed and ordered to inspect agricultural power lines, he said.
