Three couples have entered into a partnership remotely, including one same-sex couple. The Council emphasizes that there is a clear tendency to register partnerships in person.
Partnership agreements have been concluded in Riga, Liepāja, Daugavpils, Jēkabpils, Jūrmala, Ventspils, Cēsis, Ikškile, Sigulda. “In other words, this is not only an activity carried out by residents of Riga,” notes the council.
It has already been announced that on July 1, a regulation will come into force in Latvia, introducing a new law institute – partnership. Within its framework, all couples, including same-sex couples, can register their relationship.
The first couple used this opportunity on July 1 just after midnight. The partnership was first registered by Jānis and Maksims, who met at the beginning of 2019 and started living together at the end of the same year.
Amendments to the Notary Law are part of a package of laws that provide for the possibility for two adult persons – both of different sexes and of the same sex – to register their relationship with a sworn notary. When registering a partnership, legal, economic and social protection of the close personal relationships of two people will be ensured at the national level, as information about the partnership will be entered in the Register of Natural Persons.
After the establishment of the partnership, the partner will have the right to make decisions related to the treatment of the other partner, if he himself is not able to take care of himself or freely express his will, to obtain social guarantees, for example, to receive the pension amounts calculated for the partner, which have not been paid until his death, as also obtain personal income tax relief for mutual gifts and loans.
