(ANSA) – NAPLES, SEPTEMBER 14 – “We need to reflect deeply on mental health in prison, where one in four inmates suffers from psychiatric disorders and where there are few therapeutic tools available”. Thus, the president of the Uspp Giuseppe Moretti and the regional secretary Ciro Auricchio, comment on the transfer of the Malian inmate who committed acts of cannibalism to the prison of Naples-Poggioreale.
“The prisoner – the two unionists continue – has finally been transferred to a psychiatric ward of the San Giovanni Bosco hospital in Naples. The Rems – they underline – are a failure: the waiting lists are long, the mental health departments do not work due to a lack of psychiatrists and so the prisoners remain in prison and the attacks and the work of the prison police become increasingly burdensome”.
Moretti and Auricchio recalling that “in Poggioreale alone there is a shortage of 150 agents, 800 in the whole of Campania: we ask to urgently send medical personnel specialized in psychiatry – conclude Moretti and Auricchio – to resolve these dysfunctions within the penal institutions of the region”.
