As an integral part of the US Navy’s presence in the region, Central Command announced that the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt entered the 5th Fleet area of operations. The ship, along with its Air Wing and escort, will replace the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower’s strike group, an element deployed in the area for more than nine months following the attacks against Israel last month September 2023.

The aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN 71 is the flagship of Strike Group 9, a formation that also includes the 11th Air Wing, units of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 23 and the Ticonderoga-class cruiser. Led by the Roosevelt, the Strike Group left the San Diego Naval Base on January 11, as part of a regular deployment to support the operations of the US Navy and Forces in the Western Pacific.

Offensive actions by Houthi forces against merchant ships in and around the Red Sea have forced the United States to maintain the presence of one of its “balanced ships” in the region. The offensive and defensive capabilities offered by the Strike Group are a guarantee to face attacks by air and naval drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles launched from Yemen.

During her deployment to the Central Command area of operations (CENTCOM), the aircraft carrier Eisenhower provided cover for maritime traffic in the Red Sea, as well as additional protection for Israel. The “Ike” also participated in offensive operations against positions and infrastructure of Houthi forces in Yemen, and its F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighters achieved dozens of air-to-air victories.

For fixed and rotary wing air modes, the aircraft carrier Roosevelt has the Allah Air Force 11, which consists of the following squadrons:

  • Strike Fighter Squadron 25 “Fist of the Fleet”, with F/A-18E Super Hornet
  • Strike Fighter Squadron 34 “Blue Blasters” with F/A-18E Super Hornet
