Ustad Mihir Lala Saha, vocalist and classical musician of Swadhin Bangla Betarkendra, is no more. He died today (August 17) at his home. He was 84 at the time of his death.

The news of the death of Mihir Lala Saha was confirmed to the media by his wife Nazrul musician Jayanthi Lala.

It is known that Mihir Lala Saha was under treatment in a private hospital in Chittagong for 17 consecutive days. Although he was not fully recovered, he was taken home on the advice of the doctor on August 8. Ustad Mihir Lala Dui is a renowned classical musician of Bengal and a guru of many artistes. He has spent more than half a century in the pursuit of music.

Mihir Lala was born in Cox’s Bazar in 1941 but grew up in Popadia village of Kanungopara, Boalkhali, Chittagong. Mihir Lala is the third child of lawyer Chandra Vinod Lala and Kuldabala Lala. The elder brother Rabindra Nath Lala was a student of the famous master Pandit Bhishmadev Chattopadhyay for 25 years. He received the degree of ‘Professor of Classical Music’ from All India Music College. Jayanti Lala Nazrul, wife of Ustad Mihir Lala, is a musician. He also teaches classical music. Daughter Chandrima Lala holds a degree in music from Rabindra Bharati University, India. Son Suman Lala is a computer engineer.

Mihir Lala’s immense love for music since childhood. To master Abu Bakr Siddiqui in music. After that he took training from the legendary music gurus of the subcontinent. Finally he became a shining star in the world of classical music by coming to Pandit Barin Majumdar.

The artist who received the degree of ‘Professor of Classical Music’ from the All India Music College served as the principal of ‘Arya Sangeet Samiti’ and ‘Surendra Sangeet Vidyapeeth’, the traditional centenary music education centers of the subcontinent till his death. He was also involved in the great independence war of Bangladesh as a vocal soldier of Swadhin Bangla Betarkendra. In 2018, he was awarded the National Arts Academy Medal.
