LONDON – Oleksandr Usyk is once again the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion. He proved his dominance in a rematch against Daniel Dubois held in London, adding the IBF title to his WBA, WBO, and WBC belts.
Usyk Outclasses Dubois in Dominant Victory
Oleksandr Usyk cemented his status as undisputed heavyweight champion for the second time, overpowering Daniel Dubois in their London rematch. The Ukrainian star showcased his masterful boxing skills, leaving no room for the controversy that marred their previous encounter.
Usyk’s decisive win solidifies his claim as the world’s premier heavyweight.
- Oleksandr Usyk defeated Daniel Dubois via fifth-round knockout to become undisputed heavyweight champion.
- Usyk previously defeated Dubois in 2023, a fight marred by controversy over a low blow.
- The champion expressed a desire to rest and spend time with his family before considering future opponents.
- Potential next challengers mentioned include Joseph Parker, Tyson Fury, Derek Chisora, and Anthony Joshua.
Did Usyk reclaim undisputed heavyweight title for a second time? Yes, Oleksandr Usyk is the undisputed heavyweight champion for the second time after defeating Daniel Dubois.
Usyk’s performance on Saturday night was a stark contrast to their 2023 bout. Dubois’ team had argued that a shot ruled a low blow in their previous meeting should have resulted in a knockdown. While Usyk recovered from that foul to win by knockout in the ninth round, the lingering dispute remained. This time, however, there was no doubt. Usyk controlled the fight from the outset, expertly using his jab and demonstrating brilliant defense against Dubois’ power.
As Usyk found his rhythm, he began to land punishing counter-punches. Dubois first felt Usyk’s power in the second round following a sharp counter from Usyk’s southpaw stance. Although Dubois survived that round, he was repeatedly put in danger by Usyk’s superior boxing.
The decisive moment came in the fifth round. When Dubois attempted to trap Usyk, a powerful shot behind the ear sent him to the canvas. Dubois beat the count, but Usyk wasted no time, landing a devastating left hand at the 1:52 mark of the round, knocking Dubois out and securing the undisputed title.
Usyk has now held undisputed status three times in his career, once at cruiserweight and twice at heavyweight. He achieved this feat against a much younger and physically imposing opponent, but Usyk, at 38, dismissed age as a factor. “38 is a young guy, remember,” Usyk stated. “38 is only the start.”
When questioned about his next steps after cementing his Hall of Fame career, Usyk indicated a desire for rest and family time. He also engaged the Wembley Stadium crowd, mentioning potential future opponents like Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury, both of whom he has defeated twice.
“It’s enough. Next? I don’t know, I want to rest,” Usyk said. “I want to be at home with my family, my wife, my children. I want to rest now, but maybe for two or three months I just want to rest. … Maybe Tyson Fury. Maybe we have three options. Derek Chisora and Anthony Joshua. Maybe Joseph Parker. Listen, I can not say now because I want to go back home.”
The reality, however, points towards Joseph Parker as the next mandatory challenger. Promoter Frank Warren confirmed that the WBO has already ordered a bout with Parker, who holds the top spot in their rankings. Parker has been in impressive form, with recent victories over Deontay Wilder, Zhilei Zhang, and Martin Bakole. Along with WBC interim champion Agit Kabayel, Parker represents the most likely fresh opposition for Usyk. Yet, with Tyson Fury hinting at an end to his latest retirement, a lucrative third fight between them remains a distinct possibility.
